I am honored to say that the definition of ‘birthstone’ has been written for Wikipedia by the author of this blog. It is that a birthstone is usually a gemstone that represents a person's period of birth that is generally the month or zodiac sign.

There is a genuine debate about the origin of the word ‘amulet’. Some say it is derived from an Arabic word ‘hamalat’ meaning something worn or suspended. Arabic language specialists tend to disagree with that. A Roman genius Marcus Terentius Varro who lived in the 1st century BC thought ‘amulet’ originated from the word ‘amoliri’ that meant ‘to drive away’ or ‘to remove’. Linguists do not accept this theory even though the meaning is pretty much spot of with the modern definition of the word ‘amulet’ which according to the Cambridge dictionary is ‘an object worn because it is believed to protect against evil, disease, or unhappiness’.  In the ancient books amulet was considered a must for those who worked with the dark forces otherwise they apparently risked being attacked by the dark spirits.

Now that we are clear on the definitions, it is worth mentioning that birthstone is not necessarily an amulet meaning some amulets do not involve birthstones. Also, most if not all birthstones were and are used as amulets by themselves. I hope I have not confused anybody 😊

It was believed that the gemstone is especially potent amulet if it is ones birthstone. For example, if you were born in March, you should consider looking at March birthstones. You can consult the our birthstones by month guide for the full information on monthly birthstones.

Zodiac sign birthstones are again gaining large popularity. If you are a Gemini then Gemini birthstones are your amulets! Please consult the menu at the top of this page for all the other astral birth gems.

Birthstone amulet color was considered to be very important so much so that crystals of certain hues were much more desired and believed to posses stronger powers. For example, ancient Mayas valued red gemstone amulets above all and even the word ‘blood’ in their language translated as ‘water of precious stones’. We have created monthly birthstone colors guide in the blog for you guys read the information regarding gemstone color meanings, beliefs and colors for each birth months.
