Rock crystal, or simply crystal, was considered one of the most magical gemstones of the old times, and I guess we all know about the crystal ball. Crystal is Aries astral birthstone. Swedish philosopher, scientist and mystic Swedenborg described the gem as ‘Divine Truth in all its brightness’.

Crystal is a significant variety of quartz, with other notable types including amethyst and citrine.  Rock crystal  is a clear, colorless and transparent gem. The name is derived from a Greek word ‘krystallos’ meaning ‘clear ice’ or ‘frozen water’. 

From ancient times rock crystal was believed to help imagination and opening of the third eye. Charubel, early 20th century astrologist, though that rock crystal ‘is for the pure in heart and those who think of a better life.’

Australian aboriginals considered rock crystal magical and believed it could help produce rain. In Ireland and Scotland, the gem was used to protect animals. Ancient Egyptians cut hieroglyphs on the purest crystal.

When Celts found caves filled with crystals, they called those caves ‘fairy houses.’

Ancient Greeks used the gemstone to light the Olympic flame.

Crystal is a symbol of the 15th wedding anniversary.

In China the gem was highly regarded and symbolized an upright triangle of three suns. It was accepted as a talisman of concentration and perseverance. Chinese emperor Wu highly regarded this gem and built doors and windows out of it to ensure the abundance of light.

In Japan the birthstone was called ‘sinsho’ and was considered a symbol of patience and was known as the ‘Jewel of Perfection’ and ‘Breath of the White Dragon.’ Crystal was used for making objects of art and crystal balls. Families would gather around the ball in a ceremony of gazing at it in order to seek guidance in path of life.

Some crystals are found with hair-like inclusions. Quartz with this type of inclusions is called Rutile. In France crystals with these effects were called ‘Flèches d’Amour’ meaning ‘Love’s Arrows’. They were also called Pencils of Venus, Cupid’s Arrows, and Cupid’s Net. Rutile crystals were regarded as a charm for beauty, grace, skilled dancing and beautiful hair.

Many celebrities try to rely on crystal. Adele said: ‘I was so nervous about my comeback show and I was panicking. I was out of practice and I was busy being a Mum. But it was one of the best shows I’ve ever done and I had these bloody crystals in my hand …’ Patrick Swayze was quoted ‘I absolutely believe in crystals. They are a major part of my life. I really think I’m on a journey now, spiritually and career-wise.’
